Exeter airport is situated 5 miles east of the city centre. It was originally opened on 31st May 1937, and the first commercial flight from the airport was on Coronation day of that same year. From that day forward a steady growth in air services developed to the Channel Islands, and today passengers have the choice of over 40 worldwide destinations. Passenger numbers from the airport are increasing at such a rate that a new terminal is needed to meet future demand. 2005-2006 saw over 800,000 passengers pass through the airport. The airport has been one of the greatest for growth in passenger numbers in the UK during the past few years. In 2005 the growth of 36 per cent over the previous year eclipsed all other UK airports. The rise in usage is documented in the airport's Passenger Numbers and Aircraft Movements report and the CAA UK Airport Statistics. The majority of flights at the airport are operated by low-cost airline Flybe, which has its headquarters in Exeter. Holiday charter airlines also operate from the airport, with First Choice Airways having a permanent base at Exeter since 2007. Air Transat offer transatlantic scheduled flights to Toronto operating once a week during the summer season.
